I recently had someone ask me for an anti-aging DIY facial mask. The one stipulation – it must not contain eggs. I love the way that egg in a DIY facial mask works well to tighten the skin, but this request forced me to try something different.
Fortunately, there are many ingredients that will tighten, soften, and nourish the skin for a more youthful appearance. And as an added bonus, the ingredients I chose can be mixed and stored for a period of time, unlike many DIY face masks.
Ingredients for an Anti-Aging DIY Facial Mask
Colloidal oats are part of the base for this mask. These are very finely ground oats that can help soften your skin and add moisture where needed.
Raw sugar will perform like a mild chemical peel, therefore removing dead skin cells from your face.
Because milk powder contains lactic acid, it makes this a fabulous ingredient for softening and conditioning your skin. If you want a vegan DIY face mask, you can use an alternative, such as almond milk or coconut milk powder.*
Due to its calming and soothing properties, melissa essential oil is perfect in this DIY face mask. It is also anti-viral, and can help with skin breakouts, especially cold sores. You can apply it directly to a cold sore for additional help.
Clary sage essential oil is anti-bacterial, and is also thought to have therapeutic effects on the hormonal system.
Frankincense essential oil is anti-inflammatory and can help to reduce redness. It is also anti-bacterial.
Honey powder is anti-bacterial. It also has skin softening effects and acts as a humectant, helping skin preserve moisture. For a vegan alternative, you can substitute date palm sugar.*
Liquid vegetable glycerin is a humectant, helping your skin to retain moisture.
Argan oil is another fabulous anti-aging ingredient that has been used in skin and hair care for centuries. I included it in this facial mask because it is softening and conditioning.
*If you do make these substitutions, you may not get exactly the same results, but it will be very close.
DIY Facial Mask with Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey
Ingredients
- 1 cup colloidal oats (find it here or use baby oatmeal)
- 1 cup raw sugar
- 1 cup milk powder
- 10 drops melissa essential oil (find pure melissa EO here)
- 10 drops clary sage essential oil (find pure clary sage EO here)
- 10 drops frankincense essential oil (find pure frank EO here)
- 2 tablespoons honey powder (find organic honey powder here)
- 1 tablespoon liquid vegetable glycerine (find organic glycerine here)
- 1 tablespoon argan oil (find it here)
Directions
First, mix dry ingredients together. Then add the liquid ingredients one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. It will clump up as the liquid hits the dry ingredients, but keep stirring. (I used a strainer to get all the clumps out.)
Once it’s completely mixed, cover lightly and set aside for a day. I used a towel to cover it, which allows any moisture left in it to get into the dry ingredients. Stir again and put through the strainer again if needed.
Store in a sealed container in a cool place, out of direct sunlight. Be sure to label with the contents and date. This facial mask has a shelf life of about a year (if stored properly).
How to Use This Anti-Aging DIY Facial Mask
To use your mask, place about a teaspoon of the mix in your hand. Mix with just enough water to make a paste. Next, spread this over your face, avoiding the eyes, lips, and nose. It will feel really slimy, but this is good.
After it’s spread on evenly, put your feet up and read a book for about 30 minutes. It will start to dry and feel tight. This action is part of what helps your skin feel smoother.
After 30 minutes, rinse off well with warm water. You can either use your fingertips or a gentle washcloth to remove the mask. After removing, apply a light moisturizer if desired.
