After the Trick or Treaters all disappear into the darkness I’m always left with two things: 1) candy I don’t want, 2) pumpkins that slowly rot on my porch.
Luckily, this year I decorated with pie pumpkins that can actually be made into something useful after Halloween. Mmmmm…pumpkin pie!
Did you know that one of the most important ingredients in pumpkin pie – the spice mixture – does not have to be purchased? Don’t waste your money, because really, how often do you need pumpkin pie spice anyway? (And who has room for another bottle in their spice cupboard?) Today we’ll show you how to make your own pumpkin pie spice from the spices you may already have.
Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice
Ingredients:
- 4 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
- 4 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 4 tsp. ground ginger
- 2 ½ tsp. ground allspice
- ½ tsp. ground cloves
(Find organic bulk spices here.)
Directions:
Combine all the spices in a bowl and mix well. Transfer spice mixture to a clean spice bottle or other small container.
Good for gifts
I’m afraid after writing this article I will be expected to bring the pumpkin pies to holiday gatherings this year. Oops. If baking pies is not your thing, you can still make this homemade spice and give as a gift. Pumpkin pie season is just beginning, so this will be a terrific gift for family members getting ready to bake this fall! How about giving this to your Thanksgiving hostess with a pretty ribbon around it? You can always bake other delicious pumpkin desserts using this spice (pumpkin rolls and cake, YUM!).
Check out our Homemade Body Scrub article if you want an idea for a non-edible gift you can make with this yummy spice mixture!

Thank you, Betsy! I love this post! Every year when I cook down my pumpkins I look in my drawer for this spice in my drawer, and I don’t have it. In years past I have looked up what is in pumpkin pie spice, but always forget! Thank you for a definite ingredient list! I will pull this together finally, and add it to my spice drawer! Thank you! I really enjoy getting your guys post emails!

Glad you’re enjoying our content Joy! It’s so fun to have this spice available in my cupboard. I actually put some of the pumpkin pie spice plus some extra cinnamon in pumpkin pancakes this morning…amazingly delicious!

Oh my word, the pancakes were so good we decide to have breakfast guests over for some more tomorrow morning. Yum.

I love being able to make things like this from scratch! Have you heard of tastykitchen.com? They have a DIY recipe section; it blew my mind when I found out that brown sugar was nothing but white sugar + molasses, or that you can make buttermilk just by adding lemon juice to milk!
Betsy Jabs says
I’ll have to check out that website! (You can also make buttermilk by adding a little white vinegar to milk.) I love learning these tricks too! 🙂
